Twitter Named Top English Language Word for 2009

The Global Language Monitor  said the name of the San Francisco microblogging company (Twitter) beat derivatives of President Obama’s name, such as “ObamaCare,” and the H1NI virus in its annual list of top words.

Rounding out the top five: “stimulus,” for the government’s $787 billion economic stimulus package, and “vampire,” for the pop culture stimulus provided by “Twilight” characters Edward and Jacob. In 2008, the top word was “change.”
