Author Wins for Polish Translation

Czech-born Toronto author Josef Skvorecky is 150,000 zlotys ($58,000) richer today after winning the 2009 Angelus Central European Literature Award for a new Polish translation of his 1977 novel, The Engineer of Human Souls. Originally published in Czech, the Toronto-set novel won Governor-General’s Award when it first appeared in English translation, and was hailed by critic George Woodcock as one of the 10 best Canadian novels of the 20th century.

The Angelus award, administered by the city of Wrocław, honours Polish translations of books by living authors from 21 countries.
